The less the weather left, the more carefully I looked.

Erasure
The land taken away by fog and snow, until almost nothing is left, and whether almost nothing is enough.
Some winters the mountain is not there. The fog comes up from the valleys and the snow comes down to meet it, and between them the land is taken away one shape at a time: first the far ridges, then the forest, then the slope under your boots.

Spindrift
The wind, which cannot be photographed, made visible by the snow it carries.
On Dovrefjell the wind does not stop; it only changes what it carries. In the last hour of the day it carries snow, and the whole plateau lifts a hand's height off the ground and moves. The hills behind the haze lose their edges. The drifts at my feet are carved and carved again while I watch.

Those Who Stay
The animals that live in the weather, and their one answer to it: to stand in it.
The muskox has lived on this plateau since the ice age, and it has one answer to the weather: to stand in it. Two of them come walking toward me out of the snowfall as if I were not there.
